julianne swartz

Orange Reach for a Narrow Corner, magnets, plastic, thread, weights, 17 x 33.25 x 5.125 inches

Julianne Swartz’s installations subvert traditional social conceptions of space and portray a precarious technology. With ordinary materials such as mirrors, clear PVC piping, fiber optic cable, hardware or magnets, Julianne Swartz’s interventions turn a stable structure into an ethereal environment. Her most recent works use sound and movement to articulate an architecture of frailty. The sculptures embody metaphors for tender communication, the fragility of the body, and the vulnerability and potency of the human heart.  She received her MFA from Bard College and currently lives and works in Kingston, NY. This past spring she had a critically acclaimed solo show at Josée Bienvenu gallery.  Currently, her work can be seen in the exhibition Voice & Void at The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, CT.
