Floating Line Drawing #6(black), 2007, pigmented ink on Japanese gampi mounted on rag |
Jill Baroff uses Japanese gampi, a translucent natural fiber, is a material essential to her work. A sheet of gampi, applied directly to the wall near a window, borrows light from the outside world, holding it suspended within its boundary. The material itself is the medium for the work. Born in Summit, New Jersey in 1954, she lives and works in New York. She has exhibited throughout the United States, Europe and Japan with a recent solo exhibition at Kunstverein Grafschaft Bentheim in Neuenhaus, Germany.
